“THE CRUISE OF THE AMARYLLIS
CHAPTER I
OUTWARD BOUND
On a beautiful, still day in early September 1920, the Deputy, Assistant Harbour Master, resplendent in a blue uniform with much gold lace on it, stood on the dock’s head at Plymouth, and watched a small yawl-rigged yacht leaving the dock under power. The weather conditions were favourable. There was no wind and an absolutely, smooth sea. The yawl was proceeding at four miles per hour, which was the maximum speed under “power” that a 12/15 HP motor, could drive her with all things in its favour.[1]
“What ship is that?” the Deputy Assistant Harbour Master asked.
“The Amaryllis.”
“Where are you bound?”
“Auckland, New Zealand.”
“Oh! Good-bye.”
As an afterthought, he shouted, “Good luck!”
Such was our send off.
At first sight it may seem a remarkable feat to take a small vessel of twenty-eight tons gross, or thirty-six tons Thames measurement, round the world via New Zealand. A relatively short time ago it would have been so regarded. Today, it is now recognized that quite small, well-found vessels are safe even in bad weather.
[1] Editor’s Note: The Amaryllis was definitely underpowered by the standards of a modern sailboat of its size. That it had an auxiliary engine made it somewhat extraordinary, nevertheless.”
G.H.P. Muhlhauser was the first yachtsman to take a small sailboat around the world via the Panama and Suez Canals. Oxriver Publishing is producing the annotated edition of this sailing classic The Cruise of the Amaryllis first written in 1924. The current edition is edited and read by Linus Wilson.
