The Cruise of the Amaryllis (Annotated) Ch. 1 by GHP Muhlhauser ed. Linus Wilson Ep. 60 of The Slow Boat Sailing Podcast

“THE CRUISE OF THE AMARYLLIS

CHAPTER I

OUTWARD BOUND

On a beautiful, still day in early September 1920, the Deputy, Assistant Harbour Master, resplendent in a blue uniform with much gold lace on it, stood on the dock’s head at Plymouth, and watched a small yawl-rigged yacht leaving the dock under power. The weather conditions were favourable. There was no wind and an absolutely, smooth sea. The yawl was proceeding at four miles per hour, which was the maximum speed under “power” that a 12/15 HP motor, could drive her with all things in its favour.[1]

“What ship is that?” the Deputy Assistant Harbour Master asked.

The Amaryllis.”

“Where are you bound?”

“Auckland, New Zealand.”

“Oh! Good-bye.”

As an afterthought, he shouted, “Good luck!”

Such was our send off.

At first sight it may seem a remarkable feat to take a small vessel of twenty-eight tons gross, or thirty-six tons Thames measurement, round the world via New Zealand. A relatively short time ago it would have been so regarded. Today, it is now recognized that quite small, well-found vessels are safe even in bad weather.

[1] Editor’s Note: The Amaryllis was definitely underpowered by the standards of a modern sailboat of its size. That it had an auxiliary engine made it somewhat extraordinary, nevertheless.”

G.H.P. Muhlhauser was the first yachtsman to take a small sailboat around the world via the Panama and Suez Canals. Oxriver Publishing is producing the annotated edition of this sailing classic The Cruise of the Amaryllis first written in 1924. The current edition is edited and read by Linus Wilson.

Susie Goodall is sailing straight into a cyclone in the Golden Globe Race

Susie Goodall is only woman and United Kingdom representative in the Golden Globe Race. If she is going to to follow in the footsteps of the 1968 Golden Globe winner Sir Robin Knox-Johnston of England, she will have to survive or avoid a 55-70 knot storm she is sailing right into. She is currently in fourth place in the race, having just passed the longitude of Cape Leeuwen in southwestern Australia. She moved up in the rankings in September when the second and third place boats were dismasted in a similar storm, requiring an international rescue.

Golden Globe Race (GGR) headquarters warned her to sail to avoid the eye of the storm. The competitors in the GGR retro race are not allowed to use satellite phones except to communicate to race headquarters. They are not allowed to get weather routing advice, but the GGR race will warn competitors of severe storms. They can get weather forecasts from HAM radio technology available in 1968.

DISMASTED SAILBOAT ADRIFT MYSTERY: Mr. Farley was RESCUED. Sadie Thibodeaux was NOT.

On a hot Sunday, August 5, 2018, in New Orleans, Sadie Thibodeaux went out on Michael Lee Farley’s 34-foot sailboat the GOOD HUMOR . The boat would be found adrift without a mast or crew 100 yards from shore near the UNO campus. Only a dog was on board. 13 hours later the U.S. Coast Guard New Orleans would locate Mr. Farley a mile from the south shore of the Lake Pontchartrain. It would not be until Tuesday afternoon that the exercise instructor Sadie Thibodeaux would be found by the United Cajun Navy volunteers, 1/4 mile from the Seabrook Boat Launch.

Linus Wilson takes you to the center of the search at the USCG station New Orleans in Metairie Louisiana, The University of New Orleans (UNO), Orleans Marina, Lakeshore Drive, the Seabrook Boat Launch, and the New Orleans Lakefront Airport to help unravel the mystery of what caused Sadie Thibodeaux and Micheal Lee Farley to leave the confines of the GOOD HUMOR sailboat.

You will also see Commander Jeff Walls of the Lakeview 3rd district of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) comment on the investigation.

Was it bad weather? Did they go for a swim and the boat drifted away? Watch and find out.

We referenced a quote from Sadie’s sister in the following article:

The video features a story that relates to rescue and recovery from Sir Robin Knox Johnston the first man to sail around the globe solo and non-stop in his boat Suhaili as he encourages Golden Globe Race (GGR) 2018 participants Antoine Cousot and Nabil Amra.

This video also features an extended interview with Todd Terrell who led the United Cajun Navy search for Sadie on August 7, 2018.

Our CATAMARAN is on FIRE!!!

Nothing is more dangerous than fire at sea. Two Florida cruisers were rescued as their boat burned to the water line. Linda Szetoo, 59, and Paul Doughty, 71, discovered smoke coming out their 38-foot sailing catamaran’s engine.

They were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and Tow Boat US, 3 miles from Ft. Pierce inlet after they set off for Miami on July 19, 2018, according to

On her Facebook page Ms. Szetoo identified her catamaran as the boat Blind Faith. A listing for a 38-foot Fountain Pajot sailing catamaran named Blind Faith said its asking price was $155,00.

He SWAM into a WHALE in TONGA! S3 SNEAK PEAK of Slow Boat Sailing

I could not believe I got so close to the 30-ton WHALE!

Get the SECRETS of swimming with the whales in Vava’u, Tonga. Linus gives you the tricks to go on the swim of the LIFETIME with a 30-ton HUMPBACK whale and her calf! You’ll see several minutes of awesome underwater shots of a nursing humpback whale calf and its mother in this video.

This is a re-edited version of our original whale swim video based on viewer feedback.

Linus stumbles into the whale swim tour that he later learned Sailing La Vagabonde took in their awesome video below with the whale tour operator:

The Kingdom of Tonga is the breeding ground for humpback whales. The most whale tours run out the the sailboat charter base of Niefu, Vava’u, Tonga. The easiest whales to swim with are a mother and calf humpback. After sighting half-a-dozen whales breaching, they found a whale that was willing to let them get close enough to swim.

This is a sneak peak of season 3 coming a year early! We are currently 2/3 of the way through season 2, and the whale swim comes near the end of season 3. Season 3 is already filmed and is in post-production and it will feature Tahiti, Bora Bora, Aitutaki, Tongatapu, and Vava’u. The Slow Boat will visit French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, and the Kingdom of Tonga in season 3 which premiers in 2019.

The underwater shots were filmed with the Fluid+Form 4K camera https://www.amazon.com/Action-Camera-FLUID-FORM-Long-Lasting/dp/B075YGMD8M
which sponsored several episodes in the past including:

In season 2 of Slow Boat Sailing , Linus, Daly (dog), and crew are sailing across the Pacific to the Marquesas, Tuamotus, and Society Islands of French Polynesia. The boat’s crew visits Hiva Oa, Tahuata, Fatu Hiva, Ua Huka, Nuka Hiva, and Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. They sail offshore to the Fakarava atoll in the Tuamotos. They also cruise Tahiiti and Moorea in the Society Islands.

PS-Whale

Welcome to the new Slow Boat Sailing blog site!

Whale2

Hey, y’all! I’m keeping the old posts here, but newer ones are going to have the handle of this blog:

https://slowboatsailing.travel.blog

We are still going to be bringing you the stories of the most interesting cruising sailors in the world in podcastYouTube, and print.

In addition, we will be featuring the Slow Boat crews’ part-time sailing around the world adventure that has sailed from New Orleans, to Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Tonga. We plan on continuing west and visiting new countries on the trade-wind circumnavigation route and blogging, podcasting, and vlogging about it.

Sailing to the Forbidden Isle of UA HUKA S2E13

Linus and Daly sail to the forbidding island of Ua Huka with its Invisible Bay and supposedly unsafe anchorages. After a 54-mile sail from Hanemenu, Hiva Oa to Ua Huka, they find the anchorage in Vaipaiee too crowded and small to drop the hook. Hane Bay is large and very good in the conditions of light east winds of force 4. Linus lands on the beach in Hane and explores that village and the village of Hokatu. Linus muses on whether Anse Hokotu’s pocket bay would be safe and big enough for a cruising boat.
